Mark was Army ROTC and a member of the Vermont National Guard. He was particularly proud of the service his father and grandfather in the Guard and was anxious to serve the country in his own manner.

Last week, 2nd LT Procopio was killed when his squad was rushing to provide assistance to a downed helicopter in Iraq. His HUMVEE was hit by an IED buried in the road. He died instantly.

Mark and I didn't see eye to eye politically, but that was OK with me, and it was OK with him. He fought in his way to protect me and those I love, and I intend to continue fighting in my own way to protect Mark's family and those whom he loved. I only hope I can honor his service and sacrifice.
